SAFETY GLASSES + GOGGLES + FOAM LINING = SPOGGLE (a mystery to solve…where did the “P” come from? – see the end of this article for the answer…)
- Your right eye
- Your left eye
Kind of kidding here, but these are the VERY best reasons to wear SPOGGLES! It’s all well and good that major advancements have been made in the world of ocular surgery, but who wants to risk losing their eyesight when the “ounce of prevention” is relatively inexpensive and easy to obtain? - Pain
Let’s face it…most of us will do a lot to avoid THIS four-letter word! Your eyes are possibly the most sensitive (exposed) spot on your body. It’s just good common sense to protect them since the means is so easily attainable and affordable. - Safety
Infectious diseases can be transmitted through the mucous membranes of the eye from exposure in laboratories, all types of animal workers, and in janitorial work. It can take as little as touching a surface and rubbing your eye, or blood or body fluid backsplash. Sometimes this results in a relatively minor case of conjunctivitis, but it can lead to life-threatening diseases like HIV, B-virus, or avian influenza. - Money
These days money is no joke! The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) reports that each day about 2000 U.S. workers have a job-related eye injury that requires medical treatment. Approximately one third of the injuries are treated in hospital emergency departments and more than 100 of these injuries result in one or more days of lost work. The majority of these injuries are caused by small particles or objects striking or abrading the eye. This costs individuals (and companies) money in time off work and medical bills.
Answer to where did the “P” in Spoggles come from? – It comes from the “P” in spectacles! Back in the day, glasses were called spectacles. Spectacles + Foam-Lined Goggles = Spoggles! I don’t know, but I’d rather wear a “spoggle” than a “soggle”, and “safgle” is really hard to say!
